Ceremony to Observe Opening of
Fugitive Task Force Headquarters |
|
BIRMINGHAM – A new headquarters,
central to fugitive apprehension in Alabama and Mississippi, will be
dedicated in a ceremony here on Monday, August 6.
The ceremonial opening of the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task
Force Headquarters (GCRFTF) will take place at 10:00 a.m. (CST) at
the Federal Reserve Bank, Liberty Park. On hand for the event will
be Sen. Richard Shelby and U.S. Marshals Director John F. Clark.
They will be joined by chiefs of police from state and local
departments, sheriffs from local offices, and Birmingham community
civic leaders.
The Task Force is one of six Regional Fugitive Task Forces that were
established as a result of the enactment of the Presidential Threat
Protection Act of 2000. Headed by the U.S. Marshals, Regional
Fugitive Task Forces combine the collective resources of local,
state and federal law enforcement agencies to seek out and arrest
the regions’ most violent offenders.
"The Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force is the newest addition
to using the regional approach to apprehend violent fugitives,” said
John F. Clark, Director of the U.S. Marshals Service. “Drawing on
the combined resources of local, state and federal law enforcement
throughout the Gulf Coast region, we've formulated a massive and
permanent partnership to track down the most dangerous offenders who
disrupt the quality of life in our communities.”
The task force has already been successful in its fugitive
apprehension objectives. Since the GCRFTF became operational in July
2006, it has closed over 3,473 felony warrants, including 115 for
homicide, 202 for sexual assault or offense and 280 for robbery
charges. “Our goal is simple: find them, arrest them, and bring them
to justice,” Clark said.
