"Fugitive Safe Surrender" Program
Results in Over 800 Cleared Warrants |
|
Peter M. Swaim, United States Marshal
for the Southern District of Indiana announces the results of both
phases for the United States Marshals Service initiative “Fugitive
Safe Surrender”.
The Indianapolis, United States Marshals office kicked off Phase One
of “Fugitive Safe Surrender” on Wednesday, April 25, 2007. Phase One
of “Fugitive Safe Surrender” was scheduled to run from Wednesday,
April 25, through Saturday, April 28, 2007. Phase One of Fugitive
Safe Surrender was conducted out of the Messiah Missionary Baptist
Church, 5640 East 38th Street in Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis office is the 3rd city in the country to launch the
United States Marshals initiative that encourages persons wanted for
non-violent misdemeanor and/or felony offenses. The goal of Fugitive
Safe Surrender is to reduce the risk to law enforcement officers who
pursue fugitives, to the neighborhoods in which fugitives hide, and
to the fugitives themselves. Even though Fugitive Safe Surrender
targets non-violent offenders, a large number of the subjects
surrendered on felony charges ranging from narcotics dealing to
attempted murder. As word spread in the community, the daily number
of those surrendering increased daily resulting in a total of 531
persons surrendering at Messiah Missionary Baptist Church. Each
person who surrendered had their case either adjudicated or had
their case continued.
The total cases cleared during both phases of “Fugitive Safe
Surrender” amounted to 814 warrants being cleared. To put in
perspective the success of this operation, it would take almost two
years for the local United States Marshals fugitive task force to
clear this many warrants. The United States Marshals Service would
like to thank the following agencies who made “Fugitive Safe
Surrender” a tremendous success in Indianapolis: Marion County
Justice Agency, Marion County Probation Department, Marion County
Sheriffs Department, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department,
Marion County Failure to Appear Unit, Marion County Prosecutors
Office, Lawrence Police Department, and the many members of the
Marion County Judiciary who participated.
