Atlanta, GA - At approximately
7:30pm on February 13, 2007, Derrest Jones, 28, was captured by
members of the U.S. Marshal’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force
and the Atlanta Police Department. Jones was wanted by the Atlanta
Police Department for Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer.
Investigators believe that at approximately 3:30am on February 10,
2007, Jones fired on an Atlanta Police Officer striking him once in
the arm. The shooting occurred after the officer made a traffic stop
and Jones attempted to flee the scene on foot.
Tonight after an intense three day manhunt conducted by
investigators from the Atlanta Police Department and the U.S.
Marshal’s SERFTF, investigators were able to locate Jones at a
residence on Regents St. SW, Atlanta, GA. While attempting to arrest
Jones, investigators were forced to breach the door of the
residence. During a search of the residence Jones was located hiding
in the attic at which time he by failing to follow commands and
attempting to resist arrest forced investigators to Taze him.
After his arrest, Jones was taken to Grady Hospital for observation.
Additionally, Jones’ girlfriend, Temieko Felton, 32, was arrested
for obstruction of police, hindering apprehension and possession of
marijuana.
Jones has a criminal history that includes numerous convictions for
drug violations. The Marshals Service considered Jones to be armed
and dangerous.
The Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force (SERFTF) is a team
comprised of law enforcement officers from the United States
Marshal, as well as, 27 other local, state and federal agencies. The
task force’s objective is to seek out and arrest the regions most
violent offenders. Since the inception of the task force in
September of 2003, the SERFTF has closed over 10,000 felony
warrants. Annually, more fugitives are arrested by U.S. Marshals
than all other federal agencies combined.
