U.S Marshals’ Task
Force Arrests Stabbing Suspect
COLUMBIA, SC -
Members of Operation Intercept located and apprehended Norton Lionel
Byrd, Jr. today. Byrd was the subject of (2) Assault and Battery
with Intent to Kill warrants from Chesterfield County. Byrd is
alleged to have stabbed two patrons of Shirley’s Lounge in Society
Hill on April 18th. He was booked into the Darlington County
Detention Center awaiting court proceedings.
Deputy marshals began looking for Byrd on Monday, May 14th. With the
assistance of state and local agents assigned to Operation
Intercept, they were able to track him to an address on Mallard Duck
Lane in Darlington where he was taken into custody at approximately
1:00 PM. In announcing the arrest, United States Marshal Johnny Mack
Brown said, “ As we approached, Byrd initially ran toward the rear
of the residence but eventually was taken into custody peacefully.
We also recovered a small quantity of suspected crack cocaine.”
Established in 1789, the United States Marshals Service is the
nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency. In fiscal 2005, the
Marshals arrested more than 35,500 federal fugitives, clearing
38,500 felony warrants. Marshals Service-led task forces like South
Carolina’s Operation Intercept arrested 44,000 state and local
fugitives, clearing 51,200 state and local felony warrants. Locally,
Operation Intercept arrested over 2,900 South Carolina fugitives
