Northport-East Northport Students Win Two of the Top Prizes at Brookhaven Lab's Elementary School Science Fair

UPTON, NY — More than 500 science projects from 121 Suffolk County schools were entered in the 2008 Elementary School Science Fair, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Laboratory's Office of Educational Programs coordinated the fair, which was held at the Laboratory on May 3. Brookhaven scientists and local elementary school teachers judged the projects.

2008 Science Fair First Place Winners

Medals were awarded for the first-place winner at each grade level. The winners are (pictured above, clockwise from top left):

  • John Carlisi, kindergarten, Longwood Central School District, for his project titled "Do All Spiders Spin the Same Web?" [image]
  • Bridget Pickford, first grade, Kings Park Central School District, "Whose Mouth is Cleaner - Dog or Human?" [image]
  • Cassie Rodichok, second grade, Smithtown Central School District, "Do Plants Breathe?" [image]
  • Heather Jerome (not pictured above), third grade, Northport-East Northport Union Free School District, "One Grain at a Time" [image]
  • Ben Schorn, fourth grade, Northport-East Northport Union Free School District, "Super Science Skateboard Trick" (Schorn also won first prize in both the 2004 and 2005 Brookhaven Lab Elementary School Science Fair.) [image]
  • Scott Massa, fifth grade, Commack School District, "Hit, Till & Roll" [image]
  • Michael D'Agati, sixth grade, Miller Place Union Free School District, "Nanowire Bridges" [image]
