Subject Summary Tape Files (SSTF)

Available on CD-ROM, the Subject Summary Tape Files (SSTF), provide a variety of data on subjects such as the foreign-born population, the Black population, persons of Hispanic origin, education in the United States, and more. Data are provided for a variety of geographic areas. Depending on the file, they may include data for the U.S. as a whole, regions, divisions, states, metropolitan areas, and large counties and places.



The Foreign-Born Population of the United States (SSTF01) | Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the characteristics of the foreign-born population in the United States. Data are cross-classified by place (region, country) of birth of foreign-born population.

Population subjects include number of persons, age, sex, marital status, citizenship status, year of entry into the United States, language spoken at home and the ability to speak English, and more. Housing subjects include number of housing units, kitchen and plumbing facilities, tenure (owner/renter occupied), and more.

Data are cross-classified by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin of the household, household size, married couple family householder, and married couple family householder with husband or wife absent.

Data includes number of persons and housing units, year structure built, rooms and bedrooms in unit, house heating fuel, kitchen and plumbing facilities, source of water, sewage disposal, tenure, real estate taxes, rent, telephone and vehicle availability and more. Data are also included for the number of person 60 years of age and older living in group quarters.

Earnings by Occupation and Education, SSTF22: U.S. | Contains sample data for both 100-percent and sample subjects in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing on the occupations, earnings, and education of persons 18 years of age and over in the experience civilian labor force who worked and had earnings in 1989.

Data file contains information on the number of persons in detailed occupation categories which are cross-classified by age, sex,a nd five categories of race (White, Black, American Indian, Eskimo, or Aleut, Asian or Pacific Islanders, other race) as well as by Hispanic origin (of any race). These subjects, in turn, are cross-classified by educational attainment, usual hours worked, hourly earnings, and arrnual earnings in 1989.
