NIOSH Docket Number 123:

Positive-Pressure Closed Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus

The NIOSH, National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory is currently reevaluating existing limitations on and the precaution for safe use of positive-pressure closed-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus. NIOSH's existing prohibition is that this type of breathing apparatus, which uses a breathing gas of pure oxygen, should not be used during direct exposure to open flames and/or high radiant heat to assure the wearer’s safety. NIOSH had previously determined that until it has been demonstrated that these devices can be worn under such conditions, it is prudent to restrict their use. A Federal Register Notice was released on Friday, January 25, 2008 seeking stakeholder input. Public responses on this topic and more information are available below in PDF format.
