Owls: Misunderstood and Mysterious - These fascinating nocturnal birds are surrounded with many myths and superstitions. Separate fact from fiction by learning about the amazing adaptations of these respected predators. Ages – all. Location - on and off site.
Nut About Squirrels- Love them or hate them, we deal with them every day. Discover the biology behind the playful antics of the mischievous gray squirrel. Ages –all. Location - on and off site.
Amazing Arachnids - They are your constant house guest, so you should probably know a little about them. Discover the world of spiders, educate yourself on the few dangerous ones, and maybe even learn to appreciate one or two of their finer qualities. Ages – K and up. Location - on and off site.
I’m Hungry- Learn about the people who lived in the park in the days before the CCC survived. The native Americans of our area carved a living from the land, surviving off of nature while living in it and respecting it. Obtaining food took up most of their day. Take a trip back in time to the park’s pre-history days. Ages – All. Location - on and off site.
Red White and Bird- We’ll take a light hearted look at our national bird and see if he really deserved to beat out the turkey for that most esteemed title. Both species will be looked at in detail, and the role bird’s play in America as well as some of our state birds will be looked at as well. Ages – K and up. Location - on and off site.
Backyard Habitat- Learn what types of flowers, feeders, water sources, and nest boxes will attract the animals you want in your backyard. Gorgeous photos, wildlife ID, fun stories, and landscaping hints will be shared. Ages ….. anyone with a yard! Location - on and off site.
Welcome to the CCC- The Civilian Conservation Corps built the park back in the 1930s, as part of FDR’s New Deal program. Learn what life was like for "one of the boys" whose days were spent building the park’s many cabins, roads, and trails back in a time in our country’s history when the going was tough all over. Ages- 10 and up. Location - on and off site.
Pyrite Mine Hike - Learn the history of the park’s very own pyrite mine on this moderate, 2.5 mile hike. We will hike to the old mine site, and learn about the reclamation efforts, stroll along the boardwalk, and see several existing foundations and capped off shafts. Ages - adult. Early Birders Hike- 7 AM start time for best bird viewing. Bring binoculars. Please, no dogs. Learn what birds live in the park by trying to find them by sight and sound as we walk around quietly searching. We will try to learn 2 birds by song by the end of the hike. Ages 5 and up 3. Location - on site.
Private I-D – Meet at Pine Grove Pavilion. Easy hike, 1.5-2 hrs. Discover the trees of Prince William Forest Park during this hike, and learn a little about their life and how they help their surroundings for benefit of the inhabitants of the park. Ages-all. Location - on site only.
Letterboxing - Make your very own stamp to take home, and use it to leave your mark here at the park! Follow the clues to find secret boxes hidden along Piedmont Forest Trail where you can stamp your book and leave your unique stamp behind, and get another clue! Grades pre-K and up. Location - on site only.
Operation Prince William Forest Park - Pine Grove Pavilion. You are on a secret mission to discover "intelligence" about the park. Nature has its own spies among us. Can you find them? OSS spy games are applied to our woodland inhabitants for fun and learning. Grades K-3. Location - on site only.
Spies in the Park- Meet at Cabin Camp 3. Learn all about the spy training that actually took place here at the park during WWII! Authentic games and activities will keep you guessing. Grades 5-8. Location - on site only.
Busy Beavers-The park has a healthy population of these unique mammals. Learn all about their special adaptations and how they can change their environment in this kid friendly program,. Grades K-8. Location - on and off site.
Home Sweet Home – Meet at Pine Grove Pavilion. Where do animals live and why? How are their needs similar to what people need? Are humans and animals so different after all? What habitats does the park offer and who lives in them? A short hike will follow where we will look for some park "residents". Grades K-5. Location - on site only.
Orienteering – 30 minute lesson. Learn the basics of map and compass use. Maps and compasses are always available at the Visitor Center from 9-5 daily. The course starts at Turkey Run Education Center’s main doors. For more information contact park staff. Ages 10 and up. Location - on site only.
Going Green- Discover the impact humans have on the environment and ways to minimize our influence over the natural world. Slides and fun activities will help you make leaving a smaller footprint on the earth an easy and inspiring task. Grades 1-8. Location - on and off site.
