The ALA is the oldest voluntary health organization in the United States
dedicated to promoting lung health.
ALA's Program in Action
ALA is funded to provide Capacity-Building Assistance
for Preventing Chronic Disease: Reducing the Burden of Asthma.
- Expanding the scope of the ALA’s Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative
(AFSI)—a community-based approach to asthma management in schools—by
funding 10 community-school collaboratives to create and implement a
comprehensive asthma management plan for schools using the Coordinated
School Health approach.
- Implementing Asthma Friendly Schools
Initiatives in the following areas as a result of a year-long planning
phase to assess local needs and establish objectives and activities to
meet their goals:
- Mecklenburg County Asthma Coalition, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools,
Charlotte, North Carolina;
- Evansville Vanderburgh School Community Council, Evansville
Vanderburgh School District, Indiana;
- Kansas Asthma Coalition, Greater Kansas City Asthma & COPD
Coalition, Shawness Mission School District, Kansas City, KS;
- Asthma Coalition of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles Unified School
District, CA;
- Asthma Alliance of Indianapolis, IN;
- Metro Minnesota Asthma Coalition, St. Francis School District, MN;
- Asthma Coalition of Long Island, Bay Shore Union Free School
District, Hempstead Union Free School District, NY;
- Regional Community Asthma Network of the Finger Lakes, Rush
Henrietta Central School District, NY;
- Sonoma County Asthma Coalition, Guerneville School District, CA;
- Hudson Valley Asthma Coalition, Kingston City Consolidated School
District, NY.
- Working with grantees to implement the School Health Index, or other
tools, to identify and prioritize local needs. Program implementation
and evaluation will occur during year three.
