Lloyd W. Smith Collection
Lloyd W. Smith was an avid collector of antiquarian books and manuscripts. He amassed a substantial collection of such materials, which he willed to Morristown National Historical Park. Upon Smith’s death in 1955, the Park library received Smith’s entire collection of some 12,000 printed works and more than 30,000 manuscripts.
The following files contain item level overviews of the George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, and US Supreme Court Justice manuscripts within the Lloyd W. Smith collection. These files are searchable and contain information regarding date, content and subject matter, and the recipient. References to “Fitzpatrick” indicate the bicentennial edition of Washington’s writings edited by John C. Fitzpatrick and published by the Government Printing Office in 1935. The most recent and expansive edition of Washington’s writings is currently underway at the University of Virginia.
These files will help enhance the search of these manuscript collections. Interns compiled the database files during projects in the summer of 2006, and the fall of 2007.
