The History of the Farmers’ Market Coalition

History of the Farmers' Market Coalition The North American Farmers’ Direct Marketing Association (NAFDMA) was established in 1986 as a non-profit 501 (c) 6 association to serve all facets of farmer to consumer direct marketing venues.

Farmers’ market enthusiasts have been part of NAFDMA’s leadership and membership base since the beginning. About 45% of the farmers who have served on the Board of Directors over the past 20 years have sold at farmers’ markets.

Since 1986, individuals and farmers’ market groups from throughout North America have been gathering at the NAFDMA Annual Convention to network, share ideas and develop innovations.

At the same time, farmers’ markets have grown in numbers and visibility and clearly demonstrate a need for specialized services. The NAFDMA board of directors recognized the need to establish a coalition that would satisfy the unique needs of farmers’ markets and reach beyond the NAFDMA membership base.

From this need the momentum grew. In six short years, NAFDMA brought together like-minded individuals who nurtured the creation of the Farmers’ Market Coalition (FMC). Like NAFDMA, FMC is built on a culture of peer networks and industry sharing.

After getting FMC on its feet, NAFDMA is pleased to announce that FMC is now its own, separate entity. In 2006, FMC’s officers created its own set of by-laws and wrote a charter of incorporation. NAFDMA and FMC are now two distinct associations dedicated to the continent’s farmers.
