March 08, 2002 Dear Employer, Eighty-three percent of fatal electrocutions in the construction industry in Region VII involved contact with overhead power lines.* To make a positive impact on these statistics, OSHA - Region VII has developed an initiative devoted to reducing electrocutions involving contact with overhead power lines in the construction industry. As part of this initiative, we created the enclosed "Employer/Trainer Information Kit." The kit is designed to help you, the construction employer or trainer, voluntarily comply with the relevant OSHA standards. This kit provides information on how much accidents may cost your company; statistics and summaries of construction electrocutions due to contact with overhead power lines which have occurred in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska; information on how to get OSHA assistance; summaries of OSHA construction regulations related to electrocution hazards; NIOSH Alert on preventing electrocutions; a chart of OSHA standards most frequently cited in the construction industry as a result of employees exposed to electrocution hazards involving overhead power lines; overhead power line safety tips for the construction industry; Region VII newsletters developed for this initiative; and copies of the Disaster Facts Accident Reports for construction electrocutions due to contact with overhead power lines that occurred in Region VII. Outreach planned with this initiative is designed to heighten awareness of construction industry overhead power line electrocution hazards. We anticipate employers and employees will increase their knowledge of these hazards. We know that you want to be in compliance with OSHA standards! This kit is designed to assist you in that endeavor.
