[Federal Register: August 7, 1998 (Volume 63, Number 152)] [Notices] [Page 42435-42436] From the Federal Register Online via GPO Access [wais.access.gpo.gov] [DOCID:fr07au98-143] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DEPARTMENT OF LABOR Employment and Training Administration [TA-W-34,701] Gorge Lumber Company, Portland, OR; Certification Regarding Eligibility To Apply for Worker Adjustment Assistance In accordance with Section 223 of the Trade Act of 1974 (19 U.S.C. 2273) as amended by the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 (P.L. 100-418), the Department of Labor herein presents the results of an investigation regarding certification of eligibility to apply for worker adjustment assistance. In order to make an affirmative determination and issue a certification of eligibility to apply for adjustment assistance each of the group eligibility requirements of Section 222 of the Act must be met. It is determined in this case that all of the requirements have been met. The investigation was initiated in response to a petition received on June 29, 1998, on behalf of workers and former workers at George Lumber Company, Portland, Oregon. The workers were engaged in the production of wholesale lumber. Sales and production of wholesale lumber at the subject firm declined from Jan-June 1998 compared to Jan-June 1997. The subject firm increased reliance on imports of lumber from Canada during the relevant time periods. Conclusion After careful review of the facts obtained in the investigation, I conclude that increases of imports of articles like or directly competitive with wholesale [[Page 42436]] lumber produced at Gorge Lumber Company, Portland, Oregon contributed importantly to the decline in sales or production and to the total or partial separation of workers of that firm. In accordance with the provisions of the Act, I make the following certification: All workers of Gorge Lumber Company, Portland, Oregon, who became totally or partially separated from employment on or after June 15, 1997 through two years from the date of certification are eligible to apply for adjustment assistance under Section 223 of the Trade Act of 1974. Signed in Washington, DC this 10th day of July, 1998. Grant D. Beale, Acting Director, Office of Trade Adjustment Assistance. [FR Doc. 98-21228 Filed 8-6-98; 8:45 am] BILLING CODE 4510-30-M
