Connett, St. George's School, has applied in due form for a scientific research permit (1187) to take listed sea turtles. Connett, St. George's School, requests a scientific research permit under the authority of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) (16 U.S.C. 1531-1543) and NMFS regulations governing listed fish and wildlife permits (50 CFR parts 217-227). Mr. Connett has requested a five-year scientific research permit to take 200 loggerhead (Caretta caretta), 300 green (Chelonia mydas), 200 hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), 5 leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), 5 Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii), and 5 olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) sea turtles annually in the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean for the purpose of obtaining life history data on all turtles captured, and determining migratory behavior and habitat utilization of juvenile turtles captured on foraging grounds. Turtles will be captured by hand and/or dip net, weighed, measured, flipper tagged, tissue [[Page 66126]] sampled and released at the site of capture. This is a continuation of work permitted under scientific research permit 886, which expires on December 31, 1998. Those individuals requesting a hearing should set out the specific reasons why a hearing on this particular application would be appropriate (see ADDRESSES). The holding of such hearing is at the discretion of the Assistant Administrator for Fisheries, NOAA.
