Interpretive Summary: The Nutrient Data Laboratory (NDL), through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with HealtheTech, Inc. of Golden Colorado, developed an easily searchable version of the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 15 (SR15). This product is designed to work on personal computers using the Windows Operating System and does not require connection to the Internet. Users are able to search the database and to modify portion sizes to obtain reports of the level of nutrients in a customized portion of a food item. The USDA National Nutrient Database for Windows has now been modified to update the software with data from SR16. The new version is available for download, at no cost, from the NDL Web site at (www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp).

Technical Abstract: In 2002, the Nutrient Data Laboratory (NDL) developed an e-government product for download to personal computers that enhanced dissemination of data from the National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 15 (SR15). This application blended SR15 with custom search software developed through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with HealtheTech, Inc., of Golden, Colorado. The Nutrient Data Laboratory, in conjunction with HealtheTech, Inc has made modifications necessary to update this application with data from the latest SR Release, SR16. The USDA National Nutrient Database for Windows, SR16 is available to the public at no cost online at the NDL Web site (www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp). This program enables researchers, health professionals, academics and students to have full access to all nutrient data in the latest version of the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference on their own personal computers without the necessity of being connected to the Internet. Nutrient reports are generated which express a food item's nutrient values in portion sizes which can be custom-modified by the user.
