How do you plan a trip for your class to Gettysburg National Military Park? It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3 . . .

#1.  Determine the amount of time that you have for activities at Gettysburg.  Be sure to account for extra travel time, plenty of bathroom breaks, lunch, and the museum store.

#2. Determine which combination of activities listed below are best for you and your students; all of these activities compliment one another.

___ “A New Birth of Freedom” film and the Gettysburg Cyclorama
1 hour; fee; reservation recommended by calling 1-877-874-2478

___ Battlefield Tour with a Licensed Battlefield Guide
2 hours; fee; reservation required by calling 1-877-874-2478

___ The Gettysburg Museum of the American Civil War
1-2 hours; free of charge but limited capacity in high season; directed-learning opportunities and regulations on the web at www.nps.gov/gett

___ Ranger-Guided Student Education Programs
1½-2 hours; free of charge but classroom preparation essential; booked in September for entire school year through this mailing

#3. Reserve and confirm all activities, and create a schedule for your students and chaperones.

For activities outside of the park, there are several commercial businesses and museums in Gettysburg that welcome groups and several offer discounts to school groups. Visit the Gettysburg Convention and Visitor's Bureau for further information on these businesses.

Did You Know?
The first shot of the Battle of Gettysburg was fired by an Illinois cavalry officer who used a carbine borrowed from his sergeant. He missed his target.
