Carl Hayden Visitor Center Endangered Fish Aquarium

Aquarium of Endangered Fish

The Carl Hayden Visitor Center has some new residents—endangered fish! In partnership with the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), and the Utah Department of Natural Resources (UDNR), the National Park Service at Glen Canyon NRA has a new 300 gallon aquarium at the visitor center that is home for several of the endangered fish species from the Colorado River.

The purpose of the tank is to highlight impacts on endangered fish species of the Colorado: bonytail chub, razorback sucker, humpback chub and the Colorado pikeminnow. Park rangers provide daily programs at the tank to educate visitors about issues surrounding these endangered species, as well as to highlight the efforts being made by several agencies to aid in their recovery.

Kids are especially welcome at the talks. By attending a fishy ranger talk, you will receive an endangered fish sticker and an endangered fish bookmark. And here is something even more fishy. You can use attendance at this ranger program to count as one of the activities in completing your Jr. Ranger booklet  as you work to become a Glen Canyon NRA Jr. Ranger.
