Professional Development
DUNES EDUCATOR INSTITUTES 2008-2009 Throughout the academic year, the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the Dunes Learning Center (DLC) will be providing high-quality, professional development opportunities for K-12 classroom teachers and non-formal educators. Workshops feature experts in various fields of study, hands-on activities and adventures within the national lakeshore. Illinois teachers can receive continuing education units (CEUs) and Indiana teachers can receive continuing recertification units (CRUs) for participating in these workshops. Indiana and Illinois teachers may apply for graduate credit through Indiana University Northwest and Chicago State University for an extra fee. For university credit, register with IUN through its web site: www.iun.edu or call Dr. Ken Schoon at 219-980-7766 and register with CSU by phoning Mike Siola at 773-995-2964. Fees listed here are for the registration, materials, meals and lodging associated with the workshop and are paid directly to the DLC. To register for any of the workshops, contact the DLC at 219-395-9555 or by email at info@duneslearningcenter.org to receive a registration form. All workshops will be held at the DLC unless noted otherwise.
 
BioBlitz 101 Educator Workshops
November 7-8 for elementary
November 14-15 for middle and high school

Help make history at Indiana Dunes by participating in the first ever National Park Service/National Geographic BioBlitz. While the big event will be held May 15-16, 2009, educators are invited to learn monitoring techniques and research methods in these preparatory workshops in November. Join other educators of your grade level for an overnight retreat and get involved in planning and developing BioBlitz activities for your students. Participate in nocturnal animal surveys and receive curriculum materials for your classroom in this immersive workshop.

April 17-19 American Indians in this Region:
Part II


As part of an annual series of workshops on American Indians, educators will explore local resources and tribal contacts to learn both historical and modern perspectives on American Indian culture. This three-day, two-night workshop will focus on new ways to tell much-needed cultural stories about the first people on this continent. Activities and resources will be shared on how to teach this important topic with a local focus.
Days/times: Begins Friday at 4 p.m; ends Sunday at 4 p.m.
Cost: $150; includes materials, food, and lodging
Register by: April 3
Credit Available: two graduate credit hours

Did You Know?
On November 29, 2006, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, dedicated the new Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center. The facility is be shared with the Porter County Visitor Convention, Recreation, and Visitor Commission.
