ARS Food and Nutrition Research Briefs Issued

The first evidence that high levels of vitamin A can suppress development of type 1 diabetes in laboratory mice prone to that disease is among the new nutrition and health findings noted in the most recent issue of the Agricultural Research Service's (ARS) Food and Nutrition Research Briefs and the Spanish-language edition Informe de investigaciones de alimentos y nutrición.

The popular online newsletter reports discoveries from researchers at ARS laboratories nationwide.

Among other findings, the current issue reports that:

• Encouraging grade-school children to participate in food preparation activities is an effective approach to getting the children to eat more fruits and vegetables.

• ARS has launched Community Nutrition Map (CNMap), an updated web resource that provides a snapshot of state and national health and nutrition indicators.

• How often people eat each day may affect their health.

• Strawberries, grapes, blueberries and some familiar seasonings like rosemary contain compounds that can—in test tubes—kill cells of a childhood cancer.
