Operable Unit III

Operable Unit III Record of Decision

The Record of Decision details the selected remedial actions for areas of groundwater contaminated with VOCs, tritium and strontium-90. It also documents several remedial actions that either have been completed or are ongoing. The ROD also contains a Responsiveness Summary, which documents public comments on the proposed remedial actions and the Department of Energy's responses to those comments.

The Remedial Investigation Report presents data on groundwater contamination located both on and off BNL property. The Feasibility Study Report evaluates cleanup alternatives for each contaminant. For solvents, seven alternatives were evaluated. For tritium, eight alternatives were evaluated. For strontium-90, five alternatives were evaluated. Following the evaluation process, one preferred alternative for each groundwater contaminant plume was selected and is detailed in the Proposed Plan.

The Record of Decision details the selected remedial action for an area of groundwater in western Manorville contaminated with the pesticide ethylene dibromide. The selected remedy is active treatment by groundwater extraction and carbon adsorption. The ROD also contains a Responsiveness Summary, which documents public comments on the proposed remedial action and the Department of Energy's responses to those comments.
