Stefan Voda Opens Pilot Voluntary HIV, Hepatitis Center

In December 2007, U.S. Ambassador Michael D. Kirby and Minister of Health Ion Ababii jointly inaugurated a new voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) center for HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B and C in Stefan Voda, Moldova. The center is one of six pilot centers supported by USAID through the Preventing HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B and C Project (PHHP).

VCT is a key component of prevention and serves as the critical first step for identifying the infected population and effectively linking them with treatment and counseling. The six pilot centers will provide high-quality, easily accessible information and counseling services and facilitate testing to help stop the spread of these life-threatening diseases in Moldova.

Beginning in March 2008, the Global Fund for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria will support the expansion of the pilot network to 40 centers nationwide.
