Millions of Women, Children Receive Critical Vaccinations

In November 2007, the Ministry of Health of Turkmenistan carried out its first national vaccination campaign to prevent the spread of measles and rubella among women and children. The campaign was supported by UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and USAID and was carried out in health facilities, schools, and workplaces. According to WHO, measles remains a leading cause of death among children worldwide, despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine for the past 40 years. Turkmenistan’s campaign effectively covered half of the nation’s entire population.

More than a half of Turkmenistan's population received vaccination from measles and rubella this year with support from the U.S. Government
