PEAKS Teachers Receive Presidential Award

Two of the 100 teachers who received awards from Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov on Teacher’s Day (October 1) 2005 were former participants of a USAID education program, Participation in Education and Knowledge Project (PEAKS). Larisa Nikitina from School #145 in Tashkent was a trainee of the PEAKS Step by Step program for teacher development activities in 2003 and later participated as a material developer and trainer in interactive teaching and learning methods. Dilorom Okjigitova of Akkurgan School #6 received training in the reading and writing for critical thinking and community mobilization modules by the project.

PEAKS was implemented in Uzbekistan from 2003 until 2005, when the Government of Uzbekistan called for the project’s termination. However, the honors recently bestowed on former participants speak to the enduring value of PEAKS’ positive impact on the country’s education system.
