Supreme Court of the United States

There are several resources available on the official Supreme Court of the United States website. Some highlights are:

  • Case Handling Guides are available as PDF files. There are guides for Filing Paid Cases, Filing In Forma Pauperis Cases and a Guide for Counsel in Cases to be Argued.

  • Court Rules contains the most recent rules of the Supreme Court.

  • The Docket contains information about both pending and decided cases as well as both the current Term and the prior Term. This tracking system can be searched by the Supreme Court docket number, a lower court docket number or a case name. This page also contains links to the Case Distribution Schedule and online Merit Briefs.

  • Oral Arguments contains the Supreme Court calendar showing the argument, non-argument and conference days. The Arguments Calendar lists which cases are scheduled by the month and the Day Call lists which cases are scheduled on a specific day. Argument Transcripts are posted on this page as well as information on how to obtain transcripts for a fee if you need them sooner than they are posted. Online Merit Briefs are also accessible through this page.

  • Opinions contains the Term Opinions of the Court, Term Opinions Relating to Orders and Term In-Chambers Opinions for the current Term and the previous Terms until they are bound in the United States Reports. Bound volumes of the United States Reports cover volume 502 (1991) - volume 540 (2003). These volumes are available as pdf files.
The Wirtz Labor Law Library has the U.S. Reports from the Courts’ inception in Philadelphia from 1790 Vol. 1 - 2006 Vol. 546 in book format. Thompson/West also publishes their own version The United States Supreme Court Reporter, the law library has 1882 Vol. 1 – 2006 Vol. 127.

  • Orders and Journal contains the Orders of the Court, Granted/Noted Cases List, Opinions Relating to Orders and Orders by Circuit. The Journal of the Supreme Court of the United States contains the official minutes of the Court. The Journal is published chronologically for each day the Court issues orders or opinions and new entries are posted on this website approximately two weeks after the event. Full text Journals are available from October Term 1993 to the present (but is typically several months behind).

Two other useful sites with Supreme Court materials are as follows:

  • FindLaw provides links to cases, decisions, orders, briefs, rules, guides, the calendar and the docket through its Supreme Court Center < http://supreme.lp.findlaw.com/supreme_court/resources.html >.

  • GPO Access has an archive of U.S. Supreme Court Opinions and Orders from the 1992/1993 session through the 1999/2000 session. The more recent documents are available in ASCII or PDF files, but the older documents are only available in WordPerfect 5.1.
