Partnership for Safe Water Award
October 18, 1999
Mr. Peter Jacob
Chairman, Board of Water Commissioners
Champlain Water District
403 Queen City Park Road
South Burlington, Vermont 05403
Dear Mr. Jacob:
Congratulations to you and the management and staff of the Champlain
Water District for being the first water treatment facility in the United
States to receive the Excellence in Water Treatment Award from the Partnership
for Safe Water.
When I announced the formation of the Partnership for Safe Water in the
spring of 1995, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the drinking
water community were convinced that we could do more, outside of the regulatory
arena, to improve the protection of the public from pathogenic microorganisms,
particularly Cryptosporidium. Working together, we have developed
the Partnership to the point where more than ninety million people are
receiving the benefits of the hard work done by the utility members. More
than 70 treatment plants have received the Director's Certificate,
in recognition of having completed a rigorous self-assessment to move
toward optimized treatment. Your facility was one of the first to complete
this important milestone.
And now the Peter L. Jacob Water Treatment Facility of the Champlain
Water District is the first treatment plant to achieve the ultimate recognition
from the Partnership for Safe Water, The Excellence in Water Treatment
Award. You have demonstrated, though an on-site assessment, the operational
excellence and dedication to optimized performance necessary to achieve
this high honor. I commend you for your commitment to public health protection
through the production of the very best water quality. EPA is pleased
to join the other national partners of the Partnership fro Safe Water
in honoring the Champlain Water District with the Excellence in Water
Treatment Award.
Sincerely,
Carol M. Browner
