Multifactor productivity in the utility services industries

John L. Glaser
Economist, Division of Productivity Research, Office of Productivity and Technology, Bureau of Labor Statistics

Growth in multifactor productivity in these industries slowed by 3.2 percent per year after 1973, according to a new BLS study. Results also show the impact of energy price increases on the utility services industries, which are heavily dependent on fossil fuel inputs. This article introduces a new BLS measure of multifactor productivity for electric, gas, and sanitary services.
