Refuge Office

The Refuge Office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am. - 4:30 pm central time. It serves as a visitor contact station providing displays, mounted specimens, maps, leaflets and other items of interest. The office is closed during observed federal holidays.

While the Refuge Office has restroom facilities; there are none on the refuge itself. Come prepared for your visit with water, snacks, insect repellent, and sunscreen.

What is the best time to visit the refuge? (Are you open on weekends?)
In general, the refuge is open to visitors during daylight hours, seven days a week. Brochures are available at the leaflet racks located at the entrance to the wildlife drive, at the headquarters, and at the entrance of the Kennedy and Bradley units. There are a 7-mile auto route, two viewing towers, and a walking trail.

The best time to observe most wildlife is the early morning or late afternoon hours. Some species can be observed during mid-day. We suggest that visitors stop by the office on their visit to inquire about specific interests.

Do you provide programs or tours for groups?
Refuge tours are provided for organized scout, school, and church groups or other organizations. Off-refuge programs are provided to civic groups, school classes, or any other organization when staff/volunteers are available.

Can I drive on the Refuge?
Only licensed vehicles are permitted. Access is limited to graveled roads; some roads are closed seasonally. ATVs are prohibited.

Are firearms permitted?
All weapons are prohibited except on managed hunts.

Can we ride our horses
Horseback riding is permitted on graveled roads only. Riders are cautioned to watch for vehicles.

Can we ride our bicycles?
Non-motorized bikes are permitted on graveled roads only. Hunters, fishermen and wildlife observers are encouraged to use bicycles to access remote areas.

Are fires permited?
Fires are prohibited.

Can I bring my pet?
Pets must be on a leash and under control of owner.

Can I hunt for arrowheads and other artifacts?
All archaeological resources are protected. Surface collecting and digging for objects of antiquity are prohibited under federal law.

Alcohol
Possession of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.
