Annual Performance Measures

The Virology/Immunology Section provides essential testing for diseases of public health importance caused by viruses and other microorganisms. We do this in order to provide the following:
  • Timely and accurate detection and control of infectious diseases caused by hepatitis viruses; HIV; influenza and other respiratory viruses; polio and other enteroviruses; syphilis treponemes; chlamydia; rickettsiae; hantaviruses; and the spirochete that causes Lyme disease.
  • Compiled laboratory data for use in disease monitoring, control, and epidemiological studies.
  • Expert assistance and consultation to medical care providers and public health program staff.
  • Support of public health programs and activities undertaken by local health departments and other state agencies.
  • Strain and other types of testing information to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for use in formulating vaccine strategies.
The V/I Section also forwards specimens for particular agents and conditions to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for analysis.

The Virology/Immunology Section tests approximately 165,000 specimens per year.
