Protective Intelligence Investigations

The Protective Intelligence Investigations Division (PII), one of the investigative divisions of Office of Investigations and Counterintelligence, conducts investigations into terrorist incidents and threats made against Department of State employees and facilities domestically and abroad. In 2002, PII monitored over 1,200 threat-related incidents. Special agents assigned to PII also provide support to DS protective details.

The PII division conducts investigations of terrorist incidents, vulnerability assessments, and lessons-learned reviews when attacks involve U.S. Government interests overseas or Department of State facilities or personnel in the United States. This information is shared with other divisions within DS, the State Department, and other federal and local agencies to ensure that every threat is thoroughly evaluated and appropriate countermeasures taken.

PII also administers the U.S. Government's Rewards for Justice Program and serves as the coordinating entity for the Bureau of Diplomatic Security's participation on 19 FBI Joint Terrorism Task Forces throughout the United States.

The division participates in the State Department's Coordinator for Counterterrorism's Foreign Emergency Support Team, which deploys to U.S. diplomatic missions in response to terrorist attacks or other emergency situations.
