Question Taken at July 12, 2002 Daily Press Briefing

Weldon Amendment

Question:  Does the Department have a position on an amendment reportedly passed by the House Government Reform Committee that would require the Homeland Security Department to review and approve all visa applications from Saudi Arabia?

Answer:  An amendment offered by Rep. Weldon to the House Government Reform Committee’s version of H.R. 5005 passed by voice vote at 11:45 last night.  We refer you to the House Government Reform Committee staff for the text of the amendment.  That amendment now forms part of Government Reform’s recommendation  to the House Select Committee on Homeland Security.  The Department of State supports the President’s proposal for the Department of Homeland Security.  We have no comment on the Weldon amendment.
