Question Taken at July 2, 2002 Daily Press Briefing

Status of Political Dialogue with North Korea

Question: Did the U.S. have any contact with the North Koreans between the June 27 contact and July 1?

Answer:  No. On June 25, we proposed to North Korea's UN Mission that a U.S. delegation travel to North Korea on July 10.  At that time, we agreed with the North Korean Mission to meet in New York on June 27 to discuss the dates.  However, on June 27 the North Korean UN Mission had nothing to report.  We then noted the time urgency because of the logistical arrangements that would need to be finalized because of the upcoming American holiday, and the North Korean representative acknowledged the urgency.  In the days following, however, the North Koreans did not respond to our proposal, and we had no contact with them until July 1.
