PALM BEACH COUNTY BUSINESSMAN SENTENCED ON TAX FRAUD CHARGES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Charles E. Hunter, Acting Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Criminal Investigation Division, Miami Field Office, announced today's sentencing of defendant Perry Silver, of Delray Beach, Florida, by United States District Court Judge Daniel T.K. Hurley in West Palm Beach, Florida, following Silver's January 2007 guilty plea to three counts of failure to file federal income tax returns, in violation of Title26 U.S.C. Section 7203. Judge Hurley sentenced Silver to eighteen (18) months imprisonment followed by a one (1) year term of supervised release and ordered him to pay restitution to the IRS of $327,093. Silver was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal following his sentencing.

As charged in the Indictment, and as he admitted during his plea, defendant Silver failed to file federal income tax returns for tax years 2000 - 2002, despite being required by law to do so. In 2000, he received gross income of approximately $1,110,819.20; in 2001, he received gross income of approximately $2,144,544.51; and in 2002, he received gross income of approximately $1,102,215.45.

U.S. Attorney Acosta stated, "Part of our duty as citizens is to pay federal income taxes. The U.S. Attorney's Office will continue to enforce our nation's tax laws."

Acting Special Agent in Charge Charles E. Hunter stated, "Taxes are essential to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of our government. All Americans have a duty to pay their fair share."

Mr. Acosta commended the investigative efforts of the Internal Revenue Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Carolyn Bell.
