Lander BLM Plans Prescribed Burn

BLM’s Lander Field Office plans to conduct a prescribed burn this spring, tentatively scheduled for mid-to late-April. The exact timing of the burn will depend on weather conditions and availability of fire personnel.

This is the initial burn for the Lysite Mountain project. The goal for this year is to burn 900 acres. The purpose of the prescribed burn is to improve mountain sagebrush habitat and reduce heavy fuel loading in the area. The burn will benefit big game species such as elk and mule deer, as well as improving the forage base for livestock that seasonally use the area. The project will also enhance the habitat requirements for greater sage-grouse. The area is approximately 15 miles north of Lost Cabin, east of Cottonwood Pass and north of the Sioux Pass road. It should take four to five days to complete.
