Tony,

Thanks for reminding us again that the fight to save maximum funding for Even
Start is not over. And may I add something else? It is possible, if not
probable, that the members of congress have heard negative reports about Even
Start outcomes. So, when people write or call their congressmen and women,
they should not just urge them to preserve the funding level; they should
also state one or two things that their program has done to make their Even
Start program more accountable, more productive, more in line with what is
expected. For example, they may have doubled their efforts to recruit and
retain students, reducing the cost per family. The staff may have attended
an advanced training session that taught them more effective ways to provide
literacy services to adults and children. They may have found a new partner,
with whom they will collaborate to bring broader literacy services to
families. The point is that just asking congress to show us the money won't
do. Even Start programs must show congress how the allotted money shows up
in significant results.
