I wanted to mention a resource that is available through the Cornell Cooperative Extension catalog on this issue. I agree that it is crucial that schools and parents work together on achieving the mutual goal of success for students.

This curriculum is designed in two parts. One strand is a six to seven week workshop series for parents. Skill building, communication techniques, problem solving and other interpersonl tips on working with school personnel to support your child's learning are included. The second strand is for teachers of primary grades and is a three day workshop on the importance of parent involvement, covering issues like classroom management with parent volunteers and many others that give teachers an opportunity to think about parents as true partners in the education of their children.

This two track approach was successful in reducing tensions, frustration on both sides and creating more opportunities for mutually respectful, positive learning environments to be created. Look for the "Cooperative Communication Between Home and School" materials at <http://www.cce.cornell.edu/publications/children.cfm>

Best wishes,
Susan
