Sunday, September 14, 2008: Hurricane Ike Damage Tour

Sen. Cornyn participated in an aerial and ground tour of Beaumont, Galveston and other areas in Southeast Texas impacted by Hurricane Ike. Sen. Cornyn said that while the damage is extensive – millions are without power, and tens of thousands are yet unable to return home – the preparation and response efforts on the local, state and federal levels was tremendous. Additionally, first responders are working around the clock to protect lives and property, and addressing hazards so families can safely return home.

Saturday, September 13, 2008: Secretary Chertoff Hurricane Ike Briefing

Sen. Cornyn and Rep. Michael McCaul received a briefing from Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on the status of Hurricane Ike recovery efforts. The Federal Emergency Management Agency operates a Joint Field Operations office in Austin, where the briefing was held.

Friday, September 12, 2008: Texas Emergency Operations Center Hurricane Ike Briefing with Governor Perry

Sen. Cornyn joined Governor Rick Perry, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, and other local, state and federal officials for a briefing on Hurricane Ike at the Texas Emergency Operations Center in Austin. Sen. Cornyn said he is committed to ensuring that the federal government assists families, businesses and local governments with the recovery effort.

Tuesday, August 26, 2008: Abilene Chamber Community Update

Sen. Cornyn visited the Abilene Chamber of Commerce where he hosted a meeting with local officials, including Abilene City Manager Larry Gilley and Dyess Air Force Base Commander Col. Robert Gass, and representatives from different fields and organizations throughout the community. Sen. Cornyn discussed his ongoing efforts in the Senate to strengthen domestic energy production and lower gas prices.  He also received an update on key issues important to the community, including new C-130 aircraft funded by Congress and headed to Dyess in the near-term as well as a new C-130 maintenance hangar, both of which Sen. Cornyn strongly supported.

Monday, August 25, 2008: Dallas VA Medical Center Tour with VA Sec Peake

Sen. Cornyn was joined by U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs James Peake to visit the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center and meet with staff and local veterans organizations.  Sen. Cornyn and Sec. Peake toured the psychiatric ward, the Spinal Cord Injury Center and the Fisher House. Following the tour, Sec. Peake and Sen. Cornyn hosted a roundtable meeting with various local Veterans Service Organizations, including the Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Greater Dallas Veterans Commission, Disabled American Veterans, Texas Veterans Commission, and the Tarrant County Veterans Council. Also joining the roundtable were General Richard E. Carey, USMC (Ret.), and Charles Kelker, the Assistant County Veterans Service Officer for Ellis County.

Saturday, August 23, 2008: Back to School Childrens Health Day

Sen. Cornyn attended the 8th Annual Back-To-School Children’s Health Day expo at the Almeda Mall. The health fair, hosted by Families Under Urban and Social Attack (FUUSA), is held annually to prepare area students for the school year, offering preventive health services such as screenings and immunizations. Sen. Cornyn has supported several initiatives in the U.S. Senate that promote preventive health care and awareness efforts and teach families and children steps they can take to prevent disease and illness.

Friday, August 22, 2008: EZ Mart Gas Price Event

Sen. Cornyn visited the E-Z Mart fuel station in Texarkana and discussed the need for immediate action to increase domestic energy production and bring down prices at the pump for East Texas families and businesses. Throughout the August work period, Sen. Cornyn has been visiting with Texans across the state and said gas prices remain their top concern.

Friday, August 22, 2008: Texas Rangers First Pitch

Sen. Cornyn was in Arlington and received an update on the Johnson Creek Expansion from Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck.  Sen. Cornyn also attended the Texas Rangers baseball game and threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Rangers' game against the Cleveland Indians.  Joining Sen. Cornyn on the field were local police officers and fire fighters being honored as Police and Fire Fighters of the Year.

Thursday, August 21, 2008: Texas Spine and Joint Hospital Tour

Sen. Cornyn visited the Texas Spine & Joint Hospital and discussed the pressing need for Congress to pass bipartisan health care reforms that start with strengthening the physician-patient relationship, boosting competition and transparency, and providing more options to business owners and employees. The Texas Spine & Joint Hospital opened its doors in December 2002 and is a fully equipped, 20-bed hospital dedicated to spine and orthopedic services and currently performs more than 16,000 procedures and surgeries a year.  The hospital has been distinguished nationally as a top facility for spine surgery, joint replacement, total knee replacement, and back and neck surgery.

Wednesday, August 20, 2008: Washington County Chamber Luncheon

Sen. Cornyn delivered a legislative update at the Washington County Chamber Luncheon in Brenham Wednesday. Sen. Cornyn discussed his frustration that Congress has yet to act to bring down high gas prices. He continues to push for bipartisan action in Congress as quickly as possible to lower prices at the pump and bring relief to squeezed family budgets in Washington County and across Texas. Sen. Cornyn also discussed his efforts to root out health care fraud and boost access to quality health care for all Texans.
