On April 4, 2005, OVAE held a National Community College Virtual Summit entitled, Eye on the Community College: Embracing Success in Workforce Development and Postsecondary Transitions. Building on the interest in community colleges demonstrated by the President and by several new and emerging initiatives, the summit addressed two areas in which community colleges can play an important role in education and career opportunity. Two panels representing community colleges, high schools, business, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the federal government engaged in discussions before a live audience of leaders from education, workforce development, and national organizations. The summit was moderated by Assistant Secretary Susan Sclafani, and began with a taped welcome by the Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings.
The summit was simultaneously linked to six community colleges: Bellevue Community College in WA, Burlington Community College in NJ, the Houston Community College System in TX, Palomar College in CA, Seminole Community College in FL, and Sinclair Community College in OH. These institutions invited area colleges, high schools, business leaders, college trustees, community representatives, and policymakers to view the broadcast, forward questions to the panelists, and afterwards engage in action planning for local workforce development and postsecondary transitions.
The broadcast is archived for viewing. The workforce development panel included Emily Stover DeRocco, Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training at the U. S. Department of Labor; Hans Meeder, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Office of Vocational and Adult Education; Harry Moser, President of Charmilles Technology Corporation; Janice Magill, Senior Program Officer at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Center for Workforce Development; and David Rutledge, past chair of the Association of Community College Trustees and trustee at Washtenau Community College. The panel on transitions and success in postsecondary education included Robert Ivry, Senior Vice President at MDRC; Martha Lamkin, President and CEO of the Lumina Foundation; Craig Larson, Superintendent of the Rockwood School District, St. Louis, MO; Gail Schwartz, Director within the Office of Vocational and Adult Education; and Henry Shannon, Chancellor of St. Louis Community College. Each session topic runs approximately 40 minutes.
Due to time constraints and the keen interest in the topics, panelists were not able to address all of the questions submitted by the audience in Washington, DC and the six regional sites. The additional questions, as well as brief answers submitted by panelists after the broadcast, will be posted soon. Several viewers also asked how to access resources mentioned by panelists. The Labor Market Responsiveness(LMR) publications are products of the OVAE LMR initiative, and can be downloaded from our website. The report from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Center for Workforce Preparation was jointly sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges, and can be ordered from the Chamber.
