Military Leave

The military leave policy AM317 (pdf) has been revised at the Laboratory. These revisions represent improvements in the benefits available to those men and women who serve in the defense of our country. Specifically, the policy:

  • Extends eligibility for paid leave to all employees with one year of full-time Laboratory service, regardless of appointment type. Before, limited term employees were not eligible for paid leave, regardless of their length of service.
  • Provides paid leave for up to thirty (30) calendar days per calendar year for any combination of reserve training leave, temporary military leave, extended military leave or military leave for physical examinations. The prior policy was unclear concerning the application of temporary duty. The new policy clearly states that the four types of leave listed above qualify.
  • Provides up to thirty (30) days of paid leave for active duty National Guard service for a state of emergency declared by the Governor. This entitlement will be treated separately from paid leave for other service, as set forth in the preceding paragraph. Thus, an employee may be eligible for both emergency national guard leave and the thirty days of leave described above.

Additionally, the Laboratory has extended the period for supplemental military pay from 180 to 365 days for those employees on active duty during Operation Enduring Freedom.

The policy became effective December 1, 2002, retroactive to December 12, 2001. It is similar to that of the University of California and has been approved by the Department of Energy.
