SUBJECT: COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

          DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446

          FAFNIR BEARING DISCREPANCIES

          INTERIM 10CFR21 NOTIFICATION

Gentlemen:

Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 21 (10CFR21) requires

that licensees evaluate deviations and failures to comply, and report

those that could create a substantial safety hazard. Section 21(a)(2) of

10CFR21 requires an interim report if the required evaluation cannot be

completed within 60 days. This letter is an interim report per

10CFR21.21(a)(2) regarding a deviation that TU Electric is evaluating for

reportability per 10CFR21.

During refurbishment of a safety related Limitorque actuator, it was

noted that the replacement bearings obtained from the warehouse did not

rotate freely. Other sets of replacement bearings for this actuator

obtained from the warehouse exhibited similar characteristics. TU

Electric documented this deviation on June 12, 1997. The bearings were

manufactured by Fafnir (Fafnir S7K Bearing, RGP2559). These bearings had

previously passed receipt inspection, but had not yet been installed in

the plant.

TU Electric's evaluation to date has not identified a deviation which

could create a substantial safety hazard. Further evaluation of this

deviation is required and the evaluation will be completed by November

11, 1997.

As required by 10CFR21, TU Electric will notify the NRC if the evaluation

concludes that this deviation could create a substantial safety hazard.

                                   Sincerely,

                                   C. L. Terry
