Training and Professional Development

Nutrition is an evolving science. Health professionals must constantly stay informed to ensure the latest science-supported information and strategies are used. CDC has compiled key professional documents, training opportunities, professional journal listings, and upcoming conferences to meet professional development needs.


Professional Documents

Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans provides science-based advice to promote health and to reduce risk for major chronic diseases through diet and physical activity. The recommendations can be used to develop educational materials and aids policymakers in designing and implementing nutrition-related programs.

Healthy People 2010
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
A statement of national health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to health and to establish national goals to reduce these threats. Key publications from this initiative are provided.

The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity, 2001
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
The Surgeon General's Call To Action To Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity calls upon individuals, families, communities, schools, worksites, organizations, government, and the media to work together to build solutions to prevent and control overweight and obesity in the United States.

Bone Health and Osteoporosis: A Report of the Surgeon General, 2004
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
The Surgeon General's report is a call for Americans to take action to improve and maintain healthy bones. Recommendations on what Americans can do to decrease the likelihood of developing osteoporosis are provided. The report also provides health care professionals with recommendations related to identifying and evaluating osteoporosis risk factors among patients.

Training Opportunities

2000 CDC Growth Chart Training Modules and Materials
You will find CDC Growth Chart Training Modules, CDC Growth Charts 2000 Slide Set and other resources for using the 2000 CDC Growth Charts.
Note: the Growth Chart Modules are available for CMEs for physicians and nurses at WebMD's Medscape Web site through March 2006.

Nutrition and Public Health: A Course for Community Practitioners*
This course assists health professionals in understanding how to plan and develop nutrition interventions at the individual, organizational, community, and policy levels.

Neonatal Nutrition Update Practicum*
As part of the Neonatal Nutrition Training Program at Baylor College of Medicine, One-week Neonatal Nutrition Update Practicums are offered for nutritionists who work with low birth weight and premature infants.

Pediatric and Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System
The Pediatric (PedNSS) and Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System (PNSS) Web-based training site provides online training modules and uses case studies to show how to read a table, review data quality, interpret the data, use the data for program evaluation, and disseminate the data in reports and facts sheets.

Public Health Training Network
CDC's distance learning system targeting public health professionals.

Social Marketing for Nutrition and Physical Activity
This course provides training for public health professionals about how to use social marketing to plan nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention programs.

Certificate Training Programs

Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management*
A certification program available to American Dietetic Association members, Registered Dietitians, and Dietetic Technicians, Registered.

Certificate of Training in Childhood and Adolescent Weight Management*
A certification program available to American Dietetic Association members, Registered Dietitians, and Dietetic Technicians, Registered.

Certification Program Opportunities

National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc*
Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES): A certification program available to qualified health educators and professionals in health education. See Web site for eligibility requirements and examination information.

Nutrition Support Certification*
Certified Nutrition Support Dietitian (CNSD): A certification program available to dietitians, nurses, and physicians who deliver specialized parenteral and enteral nutrition support regimens. See Web site for eligibility requirements and examination information.

Board Certification in Renal Nutrition*
Board certification in renal nutrition is available to dietitians working directly or indirectly in the specialty area of renal nutrition. See Web site for eligibility requirements and examination information.

Board Certification in Pediatric Nutrition*
Board certification in pediatric nutrition is available to dietitians working directly or indirectly in the specialty area of pediatric nutrition. See Web site for eligibility requirements and examination information.

Fellow of the American Dietetic Association*
Fellow of the American Dietetic Association (FADA): Fellow certification (FADA) offers experienced registered dietitians an opportunity for professional recognition and advancement. See Web site for eligibility requirements and portfolio submission information.


Professional Publications

Most of these journal Web sites contain search engines that allow the user to search for abstracts in previous issues. To access full-text journal articles, a subscription may be required.
