The term seismic seiche was first coined by Anders Kvale in 1955, to describe oscillation of lake levels in Norway and England caused by the Assam earthquake of August, 1950.

The Richter magnitude scale was developed in 1935 by Charles F. Richter of the California Institute of Technology as a mathematical device to compare the size of earthquakes.

5.5 Six people killed, about 30 injured and 85 percent of the houses damaged in the Dharmsala, India area. Felt at Lahore, Pakistan.

This earthquake caused additional damage in the Ferndale, Fortuna and Petrolia areas. A fire caused by a broken gas main destroyed much of the business district of Scotia. Felt throughout much of northern California.
