Technical Abstract: Thermoplastic starch was blended with carbon black using a Brabender single-screw extruder and its mechanical properties and electroactivity evaluated. The development of electroactive biomaterials is of current interest. Production of electroactive materials that are strong and flexible while exhibiting relatively high conductance is desirable. Thermoplastic starch with a moisture content of 15% w/w has an initial conductance of 1 x 10 -9 S/cm. As the weight fraction of carbon black increased, the conductance of the material increased by several orders of magnitude. Above 20% filler, however, the conductance decreased as material defects overwhelmed the conductive pathway. Tensile strength and Young's modulus steadily increased as more carbon black was blended with thermoplastic starch while elongation decreased.
