Minimum Wage News

Illinois' Minimum Wage Increases to $7.75 on July 1st, 2008
Governor Blagojevich reminds Illinois employers and workers that the state’s minimum wage increases to $7.75 an hour starting on July 1, 2008. The minimum wage will increase by an additional 25 cents in each of the following two years to $8.00 on July 1, 2009; and $8.25 on July 1, 2010. On Dec. 18, 2006 Gov. Blagojevich signed into law legislation increasing the state minimum wage to $7.50 per hour on July 1, 2007. The minimum wage will increase by an additional 25 cents in each of the following two years to $8.00 on July 1, 2009; and $8.25 on July 1, 2010.

Governor Rod R. Blagojevich reminds workers of the state’s protections against wage discrimination based on gender and the Illinois Department of Labor's efforts to protect Illinois workers.

Governor Blagojevich announces State's first court victory for equal pay
Illinois Department of Labor’s Equal Pay Act enforcement efforts lead to court’s decision resulting in more than $12,000 for a female employee. On Jan. 17, 2007, a Cook County Circuit Court judge ruled in favor of the State and ordered the employer to pay $4,061 in backwages and $8,122 in penalties to the employee, making this the State’s first equal pay case won in court since the law went into effect in 2004.

New Carnival & Amusement Ride law to help protect millions of children and fairgoers

The Illinois Department of Labor will enforce a new carnival law requiring owners to conduct background checks on carnival ride operators. The new law goes into effect, January 1, 2008.

Equal Pay Act News

Governor Rod R. Blagojevich marked the fourth anniversary of signing into law of the Equal Pay Act in Illinois this week, highlighting the state’s successes in eliminating gender-based wage discrimination in the workplace and ensuring female workers receive equal pay for equal work. The Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) has responded to approximately 3,500 calls on the Equal Pay Hotline, handled 249 cases, prompted 10 private settlements between employees and employers, and recovered almost $30,000 in back wages since the Illinois’ Equal Pay Act went into effect in January 2004.

Changes to the 2005 Prevailing Wage Act

Public Act 093-0912, Employer Notice of Change

This law amends the Juvenile Court Act of 1987. Employers may not ask if an applicant had a juvenile record expunged and that application for employment must contain specific language that states that the applicant is not obligated to disclose expunged juvenile records of arrest or conviction.
