National Park Service
Start your visit to Richmond National Battlefield Park at the Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works.

Richmond National Battlefield Park is located in central Virginia approximately 100 miles south of Washington D.C. The park encompasses a large area with battlefield sites and visitor centers located in the City of Richmond, and Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield counties.

The park commemorates four major actions of the U.S. Civil War: the 1862 Seven Days Campaign, June 26 – July 1, 1862 encompassing Beaver Dam Creek, Gaines’ Mill, Glendale (Frayser’s Farm) and Malvern Hill; a portion of the 1864 Overland Campaign, May 28 – June 13, 1864, including Totopotomoy Creek and Cold Harbor; the May 15, 1862 naval action at Drewry’s Bluff; and actions along the Richmond-Petersburg front, September 29, 1864 -April 2, 1865, encompassing Fort Harrison, New Market Heights, Deep Bottom and Parker’s Battery.

A driving tour of the battlefields outlined on the park map includes 13 separate sites with four visitor centers along a 80 mile route. A full day is required to experience the entire battlefield park.

Visitors are urged to begin their park visit at the National Park Service Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works located in Richmond on the James River. The city streets can be difficult to navigate, so watch closely for signs leading from the interstate to the visitor center. The Center offers exhibits and audio-visual programs that introduce the story of Richmond during the Civil War and the battlefields and related sites that surround the city. Park staff will answer questions and provide information to help you make the best use of your time.

The park also operates the Chimborazo visitor center and museum on Richmond’s east side. This center interprets the Confederate medical story on the site of the South’s largest wartime medical facility. This visitor center, along with those at Tredegar and Cold Harbor, is open year round. Visitor centers at Glendale and Fort Harrison are operated seasonally.

Throughout the year park staff present a variety of talks, tours, living history demonstrations and special events that commemorate the park's rich heritage. Check the schedule of events for upcoming programs. Education programs are offered year-round and teachers are encouraged to contact the park's education coordinator at 804-771-2018 to schedule a visit.

Please click the link below for addresses of our battlefield sites and visitor centers.  Please note that the addresses are for directional purposes only.  All mail should be sent to our park headquarters at 3215 East Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia  23223.
