How long does it take to tour the battlefields?
We recommend that you set aside anywhere from a half-day to a full day to tour the park’s battlefields. A CD tour of the 1862 Seven Days’ battles around Richmond is available for purchase in the Eastern National bookstore at the Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works.

Where should I start my visit?
Start your visit to Richmond National Battlefield Park at the Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works, located at 470 Tredegar Street, in downtown Richmond.

How can I purchase an Annual Interagency Pass?
The Annual Interagency Pass can be purchased for $80 at the Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works. Information about the pass can be found here.

Do you have any kids’ programs?
Richmond National Battlefield Park has two separate Junior Ranger programs available for children between the ages of 4 and 13. One can be completed at the Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works. The other can be completed by visiting three of the park battlefields. You can request the program at any of the park visitor centers. (The Tredegar Junior Ranger is available only at the Civil War Visitor Center.)

Do you have any ranger-conducted activities?
Ranger-conducted activities take place in the summer at various sites around Richmond National Battlefield Park. Please call the Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works for details at (804)771-2145 or call the park’s headquarters at Chimborazo Medical Museum at (804)226-1981 x. 23.

Is there a fee?
There is no entrance fee to visit Richmond National Battlefield Park. However there is a parking fee for the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar.

How do I use your park for research?
You can get assistance on many questions by visiting the park visitor centers. Detailed research using the park’s library requires an appointment with the park historian, Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm. Call (804) 226-1981 x. 31 to make those arrangements.

What is the best place to hike in your park?
There are walking trails at many of the park sites. See the “Things to Do” section on this website (under “Plan Your Visit” ). The Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works is located at the west end of Richmond’s Canal Walk, a three mile round trip. Trails at Cold Harbor, Gaines’ Mill and Malvern Hill battlefields each cover more than one mile.

What is the best place to bike in your park?
Richmond National Battlefield Park is geared more for foot traffic than bicycle traffic. However the Fort Harrison unit, located off Route 5 is very popular for bikers, as it is seven miles long and has a 25-mile-an-hour speed limit. Most bicyclists park their vehicles at the Fort Harrison visitor center parking lot.

I am over age 62. Where do I purchase the Senior Pass?
If you are over age 62 you are eligible for a Senior Pass. This pass will allow you free entrance to you and those in your vehicle into any Federal park with an entrance fee. You can purchase the Senior Pass at the Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works. The price is a one-time fee of $10. You must show proof that you are age 62 or older. (A driver’s license will do just fine.) Note: the Golden Age Pass is not honored by any private institutions around the city of Richmond, including the “In Search of Liberty” exhibit housed in the Gun Foundry building at Tredegar Iron Works.
