AIDES Formation Paris, France.
ISSUES/PROBLEM: Professionals from medical and social areas have the same representations of AIDS than the general population. This perception of a far and frightening infection produces lacks in terms of health-care, prevention and help. DESCRIPTION: Thanks to Government funds, AIDES, first french C.B.O. on AIDS/HIV, created a training organization. The project has been experimented on 3 regional sites for 6 months. In each area, a coordinator analyses the demands and defines specific projects. A stress is laid on proximity with P.W.A. in the local reality of the epidemic. Specialists, often chosen among AIDES' volunteers, help make the educational staff. Experts meet regularly for a national pedagogic commission to define and/or modify objectives and material of the different units. RESULTS: 830 professionals have been trained, 200 of which on health-care issues, 440 on social-care issues. The experiment being positive was thus extended to the whole of France(8 sites). LESSONS LEARNED: A follow up, six months later, showed that, thanks to the work done on fears and representations, progress was made possible. Individual fears were thus turned into positive action in professional fields, for a fight against the epidemic.
