UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 504,000, an increase of  8,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 496,000. The 4-week moving average was 505,000, an increase of  12,000 from the previous week's revised average of 493,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending Oct. 13, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 13 was 3,654,000, an increase of 56,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,598,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,532,500, an increase of 94,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,438,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 426,700 in the week ending Oct. 20, an increase of  1,016 from the previous week. There were 264,616 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending Oct. 13, an increase of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,978,279, an increase of  182,923 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,802,837.  

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 6.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,132 in the week ending Oct. 13, an increase of 234 from the prior week. There were 1,269 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 270 from the preceding week.

There were 16,285 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 6, an increase of 1,410 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,933, an increase of 4 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 6 were in Puerto Rico (4.0 percent), Oregon (3.6), Alaska (3.3), Nevada (3.3), Washington (3.1), Hawaii (3.0), Pennsylvania (2.9), Arkansas (2.8), California (2.8), and Massachusetts (2.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 13 were in Missouri (+5,021), Washington (+2,397), Kentucky (+1,816), Georgia (+1,773), and Texas (+1,640), while the largest decreases were in California (-7,342), Illinois (-4,524), New York (-4,265), North Carolina (-3,126), and Arkansas (-1,904).
