TVA Selects Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Employees as Professionals of the Year

February 14, 2006

ATHENS, Ala. – TVA employees Sandra Jeffers of Decatur and Milford Chambers of Leighton have been selected as outstanding professionals of the year at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.

Jeffers, a 24-year veteran at Browns Ferry, was selected Radiological/Chemistry Control professional of the year, and Chambers, who has worked at Browns Ferry for 27 years, was chosen Maintenance Professional of the Year.

“These two employees have set examples for all of us in the way they perform their jobs,” said Browns Ferry Vice President Brian O’Grady. “Sandra is widely known as a team player who consistently goes beyond what is required, focusing on doing the right thing in all her jobs and her work with others.

“Milford’s years of experience, the quality of his work and his constant support of others set the standard for professionalism. “Both exemplify the high standards we look for to ensure safe, reliable operation of Browns Ferry,” O’Grady said.

Jeffers and Chambers are among six TVA nuclear employees recognized by their peers for excellence. Four Chattanooga-area residents were recognized for their work at TVA’s Sequoyah and Watts Bar nuclear stations in Tennessee.

The Rad/Chem Professional of the Year at each site is selected from a group of quarterly winners. The nominees all demonstrate high safety standards, a commitment to teamwork, and daily support for eight professional values – safety, integrity, respect for the individual, innovation and continuous improvement, accountability, teamwork, honest communication and flexibility.

The Maintenance Professional of the Year award is given to individuals who exemplify the values in TVA Nuclear’s maintenance professional code -- safety, pride, teamwork, performance, positive attitude and effective communication.

The maintenance professional code was developed in 1989 by a team of craft representatives from each TVA nuclear plant and was among the first developed in the nuclear power industry. Coworkers nominate employees who exemplify the professional code, and employee teams select quarterly winners.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industrial customers and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.5 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
