Shawnee Fossil Plant Unit 6 Continues Record Run
May 26, 2006
PADUCAH, Ky. – Unit 6 at Shawnee Fossil Plant in Paducah has generated
power continuously every day for more than two years and three months, setting the
longest continuous-run record for a TVA plant.
The unit has operated for 829 consecutive days and continues to add to that
record. It surpassed the previous record of 820 days of non-stop operation on May 17,
which was set by TVA’s Widows Creek Fossil Plant Unit 3 in Stevenson, Ala., in 2005.
“We achieved this outstanding milestone as a result of the knowledge, pride and
passion of every individual working at the plant,” said Jeff Parsley, Shawnee Plant
Manager. “This record reflects the joint efforts of our plant employees and the support
organizations that continuously work together on improving plant operations to deliver
reliable, affordable power supply to the Tennessee Valley.”
During the record run, Unit 6 generated more than 2.3 million megawatt-hours of
power, which is enough to serve more than 150,000 homes in the Valley for an entire
year.
Shawnee Fossil Plant ranks in the top 10 percent nationally for availability and
reliability. Other units at the plant are also performing well. Unit 5 recently completed a
unit-record of 522 days.
Shawnee is located on the south bank of the Ohio River in McCracken County,
Ky. and employs 350 people with an annual payroll of more than $21 million. The plant
has 10 coal-fired generating units.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely selffinanced
with revenues of $7.8 billion during 2005. TVA provides power to large
industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.6 million
consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee
River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage
reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
