TVA, Employees Give to Local Communities

April 5, 2006

TVA and its 12,600 employees donated more than 20,000 volunteer hours, equipment, supplies and in-kind services to local communities during 2005.

Significant contributions were made in several areas, including economic and community partnerships, education, health and human services, arts and culture and the environment, according to TVA’s 2005 Report to Communities. The report is available on TVA’s Web site, www.tva.com.

“Throughout the Tennessee Valley, TVA employees not only carry out TVA’s mission, but also work to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve,” said TVA President and Chief Operating Officer/Acting Chief Executive Officer Tom Kilgore. “Employee volunteer projects last year included building Habitat for Humanity homes, donating supplies and materials for Gulf Coast hurricane victims and helping students gain computer skills. I am proud that our employees make a difference in our communities and in the personal lives of others.”

TVA employees supported communities through public awareness activities that included helping 8,100 volunteers remove more than 300 tons of trash from parks, roads and waterways and through other initiatives, such as Kids in the Creek and the Clean Marina Initiative, where children and boaters learn the importance of keeping the water clean.

Employee contributions in other areas during 2005 included:

  • Education – TVA and employees donated time, supplies and cash to 52 Valley schools through the Partners in Education program. Schools received more than $135,000 in surplus computers and equipment, and 4,500 students were trained in computer-assisted drawing and personal computer skills.
  • Community projects – TVA employees volunteered more than 10,000 hours for Habitat for Humanity and other projects. TVA and employees also contributed more than $500,000 in materials and supplies to support relief efforts in Iraq, Indonesia and the Gulf Coast. Thousands of dollars were raised for holiday food baskets, toys and cash donations to families and organizations. TVA employees contributed more than $2.5 million to the Combined Federal Campaign, which benefits United Way and other charitable organizations.
  • Artistic and cultural activities – More than $110,000 in cash and in-kind services were contributed by TVA. Employees also volunteered and raised money for community events such as the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga, Memphis in May and the Shoals African Heritage Festival in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
